This poem was read to me last night and I had to share it. Even though it is about an unhealthy relationship, it resonates with any addiction. Where most of us are paralyzed by overwhelming emotion, Treasure Howard finds a beautiful, brilliant voice. She is a conduit for the rest of us that are afraid to walk the razor sharp truth of our intuition. If you are interested in more of Ms. Howard’s poetry, you can find it here.
The poem she shared with me last night has not yet been named, but here it is. Enjoy…
I pressed you to my skinLike a syringe hits a junkie’s armI am a junkie nowAddicted to youI knew I’d crash without youI didn’t careWanted the highI wanted youToxicIn my veinsIn my mindIn my heartIt felt sublimeI walked on cloudsMy head in the skyBut I had to have more of youMore of what I couldn’t haveI ragedYou turned me inside outMade a monster of meLed me to the tracksAnd pushed me into darknessBut I wanted you stillHad to have youAnd when there was nothing leftWhen you stopped feeding my addictionThe withdrawals beganMy insides trembledFor my belovedBut you were nowhere to be foundMy brain is bashing aboutInside my skullI need a hitFingers reaching outIn search of your touchI need a hitEyes searching for a familiar faceI need a hitBody longing for your voiceI need a hitNeed somethingTo make the shaking in my soul stopBut you are not itI’ll use myself this timeBecome high from my ownEssenceMy own beingBecause I am moreThan a trinket on your armMore than a whisper on your lipsI am a stormPassing over youWiping out the oldBlowing North with the newI riseStrong and SoberCalm and CleanAnd I don’t need you
